Operation Spider’s Web

The greatest one-time combat loss of strategic bombers since World War II. That is the result of Ukraine’s Operation Spider’s Web, in which eight Tu-95MS bombers, among other aircraft, were destroyed. This surpasses even the highest one-day losses of American strategic bombers during the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

Swedish Naval Forces

Today’s instalment of the series is dedicated to a navy with an unbroken tradition spanning over five centuries, making it one of the oldest in the world. It was founded by King Gustav Vasa in 1522 and has since remained a permanent component of the Swedish Armed Forces. Historically, Sweden has been one of several coastal states bordering the Baltic Sea, giving it a long and rich maritime history. For more than two centuries, Swedish policy was based on neutrality. The last military action abroad occurred in 1814, when the Swedish army, as part of an international coalition, helped defeat Emperor Napoleon, followed that same year by a short war with Norway, by then a French ally.

WHO SHOT DOWN ROLF?

Rolf Peter Pingel was born in Kiel October 1913 and when old enough, joined the Luftwaffe. On completion of his training, he was posted to I./JG 134 at Wiesbaden-Erbenheim in March 1937. During the Spanish Civil War, Rolf flew with 2./J 88 shooting down six aircraft for which he was awarded the Spanien-Kreuz in Gold (Spanish Cross in Gold) with Swords. At the end of 1937, he was given command of 2./JG 334 which was eventually re-designated 2./JG 53.

After suffering heavy losses in the convoy battles of May 1943, the U-Boat Command withdrew German submarines from the North Atlantic and concentrated on attacking convoys in the Central Atlantic. These convoys, marked UG (United States to Gibraltar), UGS (United States to Gibraltar Slow Convoys), and UGF (United States to Gibraltar Fast Convoys), traveled between the United States and the Mediterranean. The first convoys departed from New York and Hampton Roads, Virginia, in November 1942 as invasion convoys to support the landings in North Africa (Operation Torch), ending in Casablanca. After the successful North African landings, subsequent convoys extended to Oran in Algeria, and with further successful landings, the number of destination ports grew.

The Leyte Gulf Zero

The Battle of Leyte Gulf took place from October 23 to 26, 1944, and was the largest naval battle of the Second World War. Some authors even consider it to be the largest naval battle in history. It occurred in connection with the American landing on the Philippine island of Leyte, following the U.S. decision on which invasion route would be prioritized, Taiwan or the Philippines. During this clash, one naval aviator flying a Zero wrote a new chapter in the history of warfare.

The Shizuoka Hobby Show is the Mecca of scale modeling, and describing this event would be like carrying coals to Newcastle. After all, many of the new releases we’ll talk about today debuted at this year’s 63rd edition. However, not everyone knows that Shizuoka Prefecture is also the center of Japanese tea production, and a local advertising agency, Oozin Aahs Records, decided to prepare a unique souvenir for the show visitors — green tea packaged like a plastic model kit, decorated with an illustration by Eiji Shimamura, the in-house box art illustrator for Tamiya, under the name Green Tea-Team.

Hot Summer in Karelia

The Vyborg–Petrozavodsk Offensive, also known as the Karelian Offensive, was a strategic operation carried out by the Soviet Leningrad and Karelian Fronts against Finland on the Karelian Isthmus and in Eastern Karelia during the Continuation War on the Eastern Front of the Second World War. It began in June 1944, with Soviet forces occupying Eastern Karelia and the city of Vyborg (Viipuri). However, the fighting eventually reached a stalemate.

Operácia Pavučina

Najväčšie jednorazové bojové straty strategických bombardérov od druhej svetovej vojny. To je výsledok ukrajinskej operácie Pavučina, pri ktorej bolo okrem iných strojov zničených aj osem Tu-95MS. To prekonalo aj najväčšie jednodňové straty amerických strategických bombardérov vo vojnách v Kórei a vo Vietname.

Švédské námořní síly

Dnešní pokračování seriálu je věnováno námořnictvu s nepřetržitou více než pětisetletou tradicí, což z něj dělá jedno z nejstarších na světě. Založil jej král Gustav Vasa v roce 1522 a od té doby je stabilní složkou švédských ozbrojených sil. KDO SESTŘELIL ROLFA PINGELA?

Po těžkých ztrátách v konvojových bitvách v květnu 1943 stáhlo velení U-Bootwaffe německé ponorky ze severního Atlantiku a soustředilo se na napadání konvojů ve středním Atlantiku. Touto oblastí pluly konvoje mezi Spojenými státy a Středomořím, značené UG (United States to Gibraltar), respektive UGS (United States to Gibraltar Slow Conwoys) a UGF (United States to Gibraltar Fast Conwoys). První konvoje byly vypraveny z New Yorku a Hampton Roads ve Virginii v listopadu 1942 jako invazní konvoje pro podporu vylodění v Severní Africe (Operace Torch) a končily v Casablance.

Nie všetci však vedia, že prefektúra Shizuoka je aj centrom japonskej výroby čaju a miestna reklamná agentúra Oozin Aahs Records sa rozhodla pri tejto príležitosti návštevníkom výstavy pripraviť netradičný suvenír - zelený čaj balený ako plastikový model, ktorý zdobí ilustrácia Green Tea-Teamu dvorného ilustrátora boxartov firmy Tamiya - Eijiho Shimamury.

Horké léto v Karélii

Vyborgsko-petrozavodská ofenzíva, známá také jako karelská ofenzíva, byla strategická operace dvou sovětských frontů (leningradského a karelského) proti Finsku na karelské šíji a ve východní Karélii během pokračovací války na východní frontě druhé světové války. Byla zahájena v červnu 1944 a sovětské síly při ní obsadily východní Karélii a město Vyborg (Viipuri). Poté však boje dospěly do patové situace.

Although the entry of the United States into the war was a decisive moment in its development—a strategic turning point—it did not immediately manifest at the tactical level. At the time of entering the war, the U.S. Navy had little direct experience with modern naval warfare or anti-submarine warfare, but it could have drawn on the extensive experience of the British. However, it did not. Admiral King, commander of the U.S. Navy, under whose direct authority fell both the protection of shipping in American coastal waters and anti-submarine operations, ignored British recommendations, such as implementing a convoy system for merchant ships sailing in American coastal waters. There was also no consistent coastal blackout, which made it easier for enemy submarines to launch nighttime attacks on ships.

Amerika ve válce Jakkoli byl vstup Spojených států do války rozhodujícím momentem v jejím vývoji, strategickým bodem obratu, na taktické úrovni se to ještě dlouho neprojevilo. Americké námořnictvo sice ve chvíli vstupu země do války nemělo mnoho přímých zkušeností s moderní námořní válkou ani protiponorkovým bojem, ale mohlo těžit z bohatých britských zkušeností. Jenže netěžilo. Admirál King, velitel amerického námořnictva, pod jehož přímou pravomoc spadala jak ochrana lodní dopravy v amerických pobřežních vodách, tak i protiponorkové operace, ignoroval britská doporučení jako zavedení konvojového systému pro obchodní lodě plující v amerických pobřežních vodách. Nebylo ani zavedeno důsledné zatemnění pobřežních aglomerací, což usnadnilo noční útoky nepřátelských ponorek na lodě. Vázla v protiponorkovém boji naprosto zásadní koordinace mezi letectvem a námořnictvem, a nebyl k dispozici dostatek prostředků pro ochranu konvojů. Torpédoborce, které byly k dispozici, byly soustředěny k ochraně vojenských transportů. Menší lodě, které se tak osvědčily Britům jako fregaty třídy River nebo protiponorkové trawlery třídy Black Swan, neměli Američané vůbec.
