Jack M. Ilfrey

Jack Milton Ilfrey was born on July 31, 1920, in Houston, Texas. In his hometown, he graduated from Lamar High School, named after its founder, Mirabeau B. Lamar ((1798–1859), leader of the Texas Revolution and second president of the Republic of Texas, and subsequently attended the University of Houston. While studying, he received civilian pilot training at Texas A&M University in 1939. In April 1941, he entered the U.S. Army Air Corps as a cadet, training at Luke Field in Phoenix, Arizona. He was discharged with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant on December 12, 1941.

In connection with these historical developments, of which most of us are merely passive observers, I would like to recall a unique U.S. military installation located on the northwestern coast of Greenland: Pituffik Space Base, formerly known as Thule Air Base.

German high command, which during the final eighteen months of the war faced the crushing pressure of Allied air power over Western Europe, considered plans for several major blows intended to disrupt the offensive potential of its opponents. These were desperate schemes that bore little relation to reality, given the Allies’ overwhelming industrial, strategic, and tactical superiority.
