TheNorthernmostBase
The base, which during the Cold War
temporarily hosted up to 10,000 members
of the U.S. Armed Forces, is today manned
by only around 150 men and women of
the United States Space Force. It is the
northernmost U.S. military base in the
world, located 1,210 km north of the
Arcc Circle and 1,524 km south of the
North Pole. The base occupies an ideal
posion roughly midway along the air
route between northern Russia and the
mainland United States.
This strategically located installaon
forms a signicant element of the global
network of missile warning sensors of
Space Delta 4 and space surveillance
and space control sensors of Space Delta

Fylingdales in the United Kingdom and
Clear Space Force Staon in Alaska, which,
due to their geographic posions, oer
extended coverage of western and eastern
Russia respecvely.
Pituk Space Base is also home to the
821st Space Base Group, responsible for
providing base operang support within
the Pituk Defense Area.
The base hosts the 12th Space Warning
Squadron (12 SWS), which operates the
Ballisc Missile Early Warning System
(BMEWS) designed to detect and track
interconnental ballisc missiles (ICBMs)
launched against North America. It is
