F-14DTomcat1/72Tamiya
With Tamiya, you never really know which
model will follow the most recent release.
Nearly ten years have passed since the
release of the 1/48 F-14A. Two years later,
the F-14D version in 1/48 scale followed.
Fans of the 1/72 scale then waited in great
ancipaon to see whether Tamiya would
release the long-awaited “Tomcat” in this
s c al e a s we l l . N e x t c a m e t h e F - 4 B i n 1 /4 8 s c a l e.
It could be expected that Tamiya might
gradually release all versions of the F-4
Phantom, but that did not happen. Then, in
2022, a surprise came that probably very
few people expected: the release of the
F-35A in 1/48 scale. Interesngly, Tamiya
always followed each 1/48 F-35 release
with the same version in 1/72 scale shortly
aerward. Now, as menoned above, aer
more than ten years Tamiya presented the
1/72 F-14D test shots at the Japan Model &
Hobby Show. The kit is structurally derived
from the 1/48 version and oers sprues of
top quality with excellent t. One potenally
quesonable pointjust like with the 1/48
scale kit—is that the wing control surfaces
are molded integrally with the wings rather
than as separate parts. Tamiya addressed
similar cricism by releasing a late F-14A
version with separate aps and slats, so it
will be interesng to see whether something
similar happens in 1/72 scale.
The box contains ve marking opons.
The canopy allows both open and closed
conguraons, and two pilot gures are
included.

In the previous issue of Warning Shots, we
wrote about the release of the F-16I SUFA
by GWH. Almost at the same me, Kinec
also announced this aircra type. Although
the manufacturer released the SUFA
version back in 2020, it now returns in the
Gold edionmeaning a completely new,
reworked kit with plenty of details and good
t. Along with the F-16I, the F-16C Block 40
and F-16D Block 40 are also being released,
all in Israeli Air Force markings. The decals
are printed by Cartograf and will oer
complete squadron markings and specic
emblems used in camouage schemes.
Once both manufacturers’ kits are available,
it will be interesng to compare them,
especially in terms of buildability. Modelers
who prefer easier assembly with fewer parts
will likely choose Kinec, while those who
priorize maximum detail may lean toward
GWH.

In addion to the Israeli F-16 variants, the
manufacturer also announced the release
of F-16C aircra used by USAF Aggressor
units and US Navy Adversary units. The ca-
