For more than two centuries, Swedish
policy was based on neutrality. The last
military acon abroad occurred in 1814,
when the Swedish army, as part of an
internaonal coalion, helped defeat
Emperor Napoleon, followed that same
year by a short war with Norway, by then
a French ally. Since then, Swedish troops
have not fought abr oa d but have taken par t

However, the long-term verbal assaults
on Swedish neutrality by the Soviet Union,
the threat of invasion across the Balc Sea,
and more recently the policies of Pun’s
Russia toward Scandinavian countries,
have intensied over the past decades.
The nal impetus was the Russian invasion
of Ukraine. At that point, both Finland
and Sweden said “enough” and applied
for NATO membership, which they soon
obtained. A well-known example of Soviet
coercion against the Swedish kingdom
is the infamous incident in 1981, when
a Soviet submarine ran aground on reefs
during a covert operaon in the southern
part of Swedish territorial waters.

known in NATO code as “Whiskey,” leading
the press to dub the event “Whiskey on
the Rocks.”
As menoned earlier, the Swedish
Navy was established by royal decree.
Its strategic tasks include defending the
naonal coastline, prevenng invasion
threats on both islands and mainland, and
protecng Sweden’s polical, security, and
economic interests at sea. Interesngly,
up to 90% of Swedish trade is conducted
via marime routes in the Balc Sea,
highlighng the need to protect these
lanes. Naval command is located on Muskö
Island near Stockholm. Currently, the
Swedish Navy consists of two main parts:
the Fleet, which includes both surface and
Gustav I.
