B-29soverKorea
During the Korean War, the U.S. Air Force
deployed a total of 1,623 B-29 bombers. Of
these, 34 were lost in combat. Including
aircra that crashed during combat missions
for other reasons, the total operaonal
losses amounted to 80 B-29 bombers
between 1950 and 1953.
Twice during the Korean War, the U.S. lost
three B-29s in a single day. For the rst
me, it was on April 12, 1951, a day that
became known as Black Thursday. A total
of 39 bombers, escorted by 54 F-84 ghters,
aempted one nal aack on a bridge in
the city of Sinuiju. The Soviet Air Force,
operang in North Korea, sent 28 MiG-15
ghters against them. The MiGs managed
to evade the American escort and aacked
the rst formaon of eight B-29s, shoong
down two and damaging a third. Some of the
Soviet pilots then engaged with American
F-84s, while others aacked the second
formaon of 12 B-29s, shoong down one
and damaging four.
Another three B-29s were lost on Black
Tuesday, October 23, 1951, when nine
aircraaacked Namsi aireld. Some were
damaged en route by an-aircra re, and
later, 84 MiG-15s engaged the formaon,
separated them from their escorts, and
